House of Switzerland
House of Switzerland is a joint venture between Pro Helvetia and Presence Switzerland, a unit of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), and will take place for the second time in this context during the Milan Furniture Fair in 2023. Design Week, which has established itself to run concurrently and in parallel with the Salone del Mobile, brings together the furniture fair and the numerous events and open showrooms or open spaces of the Fuorisalone. During this week, everything in Milan revolves around furniture and design, and the city becomes a mecca for professionals from the interior, product and contract design sectors.
At the House of Switzerland – otherwise known as the Casa degli Artisti – emerging designers, independent studios, established brands and universities come together for a project that represents Switzerland as a whole. The entire concept of the House is brought together under the name ‘Urgent Legacy’ and addresses the pressing challenges of our time as a whole.
The six partner brands, which share an exhibition space on the ground floor, have in common not only their
Swiss origins but also a range of durable and locally
produced, high-quality furniture and objects. All exhibits were
also designed with the aim of minimising material consumption.
The exhibition concept itself, featuring room dividers made from aluminium sheets by David Glaettli, also centres on minimal resource consumption: the aluminium will later be reused elsewhere. The aluminium panels serve as both partitions and connecting elements
in one.
The six exhibitors are presented together yet separately
on a sort of catwalk made from a recycled
rubber mat. The entire exhibition is set within the context of an
imaginary space in which contemporary living
blends with classics of Swiss design.
