The Learning Workshop

An individualised and flexible learning environment

In the learning studio – also known as the learning centre or learning office – pupils can work on their own projects. This encourages independent work and personal initiative. The learning process can be tailored to individual needs, and collaborative learning at different levels is possible. In this way, pupils learn self-organisation and personal responsibility whilst still at school, in a playful manner.

To ensure this is successful, a number of considerations should be taken into account during the planning stage:

The learning studio is a space with different themed areas. The space required depends on the number of themes and focal points offered to the pupils. The workspaces are arranged in groups at fixed tables. Where possible, there are also lounge areas for relaxing or reading. The space should inspire pupils and make them feel at ease. Plants and room dividers help to achieve this.

Where possible, the themed workshops (e.g. writing workshop, philosophy workshop) are decorated according to their theme. Ideally, the room should have a door leading to an outdoor area. It is particularly important in such a room to have plenty of shelves and drawers where all items, large and small, can be stored. Items should be organised by subject area. The storage compartments can be labelled with symbols and photos to make it easier to return materials to the correct place.
